Applied Behavior analysis for autism Explained

What is an Autism Diagnostic Evaluation?

An autism diagnostic evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that identifies whether your child meets the criteria for an ASD diagnosis.

The professional evaluation involves reviewing developmental history, observing behaviors, and using gold-standard assessment tools to provide an accurate picture of your child’s strengths and challenges.

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

An early autism diagnosis opens the door to essential services and interventions, including ABA therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. Early support helps children build critical communication, social, and daily living skills during a key developmental window.

Signs of Autism in Young Children

Every child develops at their own pace, but certain behaviors and patterns may signal the need for a closer look. Recognizing these early signs of autism can help you decide when to seek a professional evaluation.

Social and Communication Indicators

Some early signs of autism may include:

  • Avoiding eye contact
  • Limited speech or language delay
  • Lack of social interest
  • Difficulty responding to their name

Behavioral and Sensory Patterns

Other behaviors may involve:

  • Repetitive movements or speech patterns
  • Intense sensory-seeking behaviors
  • Difficulty with changes in routine or transitions

When to Consider a Diagnostic Evaluation

If you’re noticing one or more of these behaviors in your child, it may be the right time to consider an autism diagnostic evaluation. Early assessment can help families better understand their child’s needs and access the right support at the right time.

While no single sign can confirm Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation conducted by qualified clinicians provides the clarity needed to identify developmental concerns and guide next steps. Our evaluation services are available across multiple countries, supporting families globally with trusted, professional care.

Diagnostic Evaluation

What to Expect During the Evaluation

At Advance Therapy, we provide gold-standard behavioral and developmental evaluations that are both comprehensive and compassionate. Our approach is designed to ensure that children feel comfortable and parents feel supported at every stage of the evaluation process.

Our autism diagnostic assessments are widely recognized and accepted by insurance providers and healthcare systems, helping families access the appropriate therapies and support services their children need. Our evaluation process follows five carefully structured steps:

Parent Interview & Background Information

It all begins with a conversation. One of our licensed clinicians meets with parents virtually through a secure video consultation to better understand the observations and concerns you’ve been noticing.

During this session, your child’s developmental milestones, behaviors, and overall history are carefully reviewed. Parents are also guided through background questionnaires to help us build a complete and accurate picture of the child’s developmental journey.

Behavior Checklists

You may be asked to complete a standardized behavior checklist to help identify which developmental milestones your child is meeting and which may be missing. This supports a clearer understanding of your child’s needs.

Play-Based Child Assessment (ADOS-2 or Tele-ASD-Peds)

This part of the evaluation is designed to be engaging and comfortable for young children.

During in-person evaluations, a qualified clinician uses the ADOS-2 to guide structured play tasks, allowing observation of your child’s communication, play, social, and behavioral skills.

For telehealth evaluations, the Tele-ASD-Peds (TAP) is used, with a clinician guiding you and a trained Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) through similar play-based activities.

This portion typically lasts 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, and you are never separated from your child.

Natural Observation

The clinician may also observe your child interacting with toys, with you, or in the clinic setting. They may request short video clips of your child playing at home or even observe virtually to see how your child behaves in familiar environments.

These observations help provide a fuller picture of your child’s natural behaviors.

Feedback Session

Once the evaluation is complete, the clinician explains the findings in clear, parent-friendly language. They will review any autism diagnosis criteria your child meets, explain the ASD support levels (Level 1, Level 2, Level 3), and discuss recommendations to help your child thrive. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and will leave with a comprehensive diagnostic report.

Next Steps After an Autism Diagnosis

Getting an autism diagnosis can bring a mix of emotions, from relief, worry, or hope, to even uncertainty about what comes next. No matter how you’re feeling, remember this: a diagnosis doesn’t change your child’s potential. It simply gives you the clarity and direction to take the next step with confidence. Our goal is to make that step as supportive and straightforward as possible.

For some children, certain behaviors may still raise questions even after the initial diagnostic evaluation. In these cases, taking a closer look at the “why” behind those behaviors can help guide more effective support strategies.

Understanding Challenging Behaviors

When a child exhibits behaviors that are disruptive, repetitive, or interfere with learning and daily functioning, a more focused evaluation may be helpful.

Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a structured process used to identify the underlying causes of challenging behaviors by observing patterns, triggers, and responses across different settings.

The results help guide individualized strategies that support more positive behavior and long-term growth.

Treatment Recommendations and Referrals

Whether or not your child receives an ASD diagnosis, you’ll leave with a clear, personalized plan tailored to their strengths and needs.

Your child’s treatment plan may include recommendations for ABA therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, or other developmental services. We’ll explain each suggestion and connect you with resources that can help.

What You Can Expect

What can I expect from Autism treatment?

ABA Therapy for autism is a marathon, not a sprint. Therefore, consistency is key to maximizing each child’s success.

After assessing your child’s skills and needs, our clinicians develop a treatment plan typically ranging from 20 to 40 hours of care per week in a learning center. Once therapy begins, your kiddo’s network of support balloons in size, and most critical to their development is the relationship between their biggest advocates: you and their ABA team!

Caregivers are an essential part of our team.

Board Certified Behavior Analysts

BCBA

BCBAs (Board Certified Behavior Analysts) create the treatment plan which is then put into practice by RBTs (Registered Behavior Technician), so having a transparent, open line of communication with your BCBA is vital to your kiddo’s progress. Your BCBA also facilitates Caregiver Training sessions; structured one-on-one time for discussing your kiddo’s goals and development as well as practicing skills and techniques that will allow you and your family to continue making progress at home and in the community.

Registered Behavior Technician

RBT

Your RBTs are the ones who will be working directly with your kiddo and providing the treatment as outlined by the plan set by your BCBA. RBTs provide you with feedback and updates after each session, so be sure to continually discuss any improvements or challenges with them and the BCBA so the team can have all of the necessary information when considering the ABA Therapy treatment plan that will best suit your child’s needs.

Anyone Providing Care

Caregiver

We ask that all caregivers remain engaged in their child’s course of therapy, as your involvement is crucial to their progress. Ultimately, the clinical team’s goal is to see that your child meets their goals and is able to utilize the skills in-center, at home, and across all other environments. Aside from ongoing Caregiver Training sessions, keeping in communication with your RBTs and BCBA about successes, challenges, and general observations greatly boosts the efficacy of your kiddo’s ABA Therapy.
